Sergio Martinez, playing for the Touchdown Club poker league, outlasted 39 qualifiers to win the championship of the Western Nebraska Poker Regional last Sunday at the Touchdown Club.
Martinez, who was short-stacked at one point during the tournament, rallied from having very few chips to take the championship. Ron Sjullie was runner-up. Martinez and Sjullie will travel to Lincoln for the state tournament on Sat., Oct. 15.
Also qualifying for state were Howard Mendonca, Ron Refior, Gina Farley, Jeff Golus, Randy Brown, Jane Palmer, Mike Lehman, Michelle Woltemath, Mark Staab, Earl Pittman and defending state champion Jeff Schulz. All players represent the Touchdown Club poker league.
The regional event was part of the Poker Pro Promotion of the Free Poker Network. The top four players at the state tournament will advance to the national tournament in Las Vegas later this year.
