Police briefs: Gunmen rob pizza place in Salinas

Salinas police said two armed men wearing dark bandanas held up a clerk Thursday night at a Little Caesar’s store on East Alisal Street.

Police said the clerk was working the counter when two men walked in about 10 p.m. One man jumped over the counter. He had a handgun and a blackjack. He told the clerk to give him the money from the registers. The other man, also carrying a handgun, kept a lookout, police said.

The clerk complied with the robbers’ demand, and then they took off running, police said.

Both men wore dark clothing.

Deputies arrest Prunedale men

Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies said they tracked down an alleged vandal and arrested him as a wanted felon Thursday afternoon.

Robert Langard, 29, was taken into custody after deputies investigated vandalism in the 6900 block of Valle Pacifico Road in Prunedale around 4:30 p.m.

Langard was found and arrested at a nearby storage unit, along with Christopher Markert, 20, who was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, deputies said.

Both suspects were taken to the Monterey County Jail.

The group, Take Off Pounds Sensibly — a nonprofit weight-management support group — is scheduled to meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Dulac Community Center, 125 Coast Guard Road. For information, call 563-7483 or the Grand Caillou Branch Library at 563-2014.

CCD schedule: The CCD class schedule is: first- and third-graders, 4:30-5:45 p.m. Mondays; eighth- through 11th-graders, 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays; second-graders, 4:30-5:45 p.m. Tuesdays; and fourth- through seventh-graders, 6:15-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Bingo: The VFW Post No. 4752 holds bingo games at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the post home, 7587 Grand Caillou Road, Dulac.

In July, the group will hold its annual Senior Citizen’s Day. The event is free and open to the public. On Veterans Day. the group will hold another free luncheon.

The VFW Post No. 7587’s next meeting is scheduled for April 12. There will be no meeting in March because of Mardi Gras.

The VFW Post No. 4752 will host the District 31 meeting scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the post home. The meeting is for the VFW men and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Volleyball players needed: Any 13- to 18-year-old boy or girl wanting to play volleyball for Holy Family Catholic Church’s youth team, sign your name and phone number on the registration sheet in the church’s vestibule or call the church rectory at 563-2325.

Practice is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the Grand Caillou Recreation Center, 106 Badou Drive. T-shirts cost $10.

Church envelopes: The envelopes for 2011 are on the table at the entrance of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Church news: The novena is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mondays at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Holy Family Catholic Church’s Youth Mission Group is selling concessions at the Grand Caillou Recreation Center during men’s basketball tournaments. The Saints/LSU Mardi Gras raffle is still continueing. Chances are three for $2 or $1 each. The drawing is Sunday.

The church’s Youth Mission Group and CCD students are selling World’s Finest Chocolate for $1. The money raised for this is for the trip to North Dakota and Youth Rally.

Donations needed: The VFW Post No. 4752’s Ladies Auxiliary has a raffle scheduled for July on the club’s Senior Citizen day. The club is seeking donations. It has to be something new, not used and not small. For information, call 381-3009 or 851-7732 or fax 851-7732. The deadline for donations is April 12.

Bishop’s appeal: The theme for the 2011 annual bishop’s appeal is “Celebrate Our Blessings.” Every household in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux will receive a letter concerning the appeal and how the money will be used by the diocese’s ministries.

Holy Family Catholic Church’s goals for the 2011 annual bishop’s appeal is $11,000.

International Food and Wine Tasting Festival

OKALOOSA ISLAND – The 20th Annual International Food and Wine Tasting Festival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center. Enjoy food samples from more than 25 area restaurants and catering services accompanied by more than 50 different wines from around the world. Musical entertainment will be provided by guest artists and members of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra. Items will be available for a silent auction.
